Chiropractic—The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare

When you’re in constant pain and feel like your body and mind are revolting on you, it’s only natural to turn to medication and, if necessary, surgery. After all, that’s what we’ve all been taught throughout our lives—if something hurts or our bodies don’t work quite like they used to, focusing on and treating the symptoms is the cure. While we agree that nothing will take the place of traditional healthcare, we argue that there is a time and place for it … and it should be AFTER you’ve given chiropractic care a try. Chiropractic relies on addressing the root cause of your pain and dysfunction and allowing your body to heal itself naturally. No—this isn’t a quack statement from a witch doctor. It is a tried and true treatment modality that can improve body function, reduce pain, and support over all health without relying on surgery or prescription medication. Treatment options run the gamut (as evidenced by the lengthy list below and on the rest of our website) and typically involve hands-on manual techniques, such as spinal adjustments or manipulations. Below are just a few of the chiropractic techniques we have available at Burgess Chiropractic. Whether your issues are related to chronic aches and pains, immune system issues, challenging pregnancies, gut health, sports injuries, or something in between, you’d be surprised how much of a difference routine chiropractic adjustments can make in your life and the lives of your family, friends, and pets.

Chiropractic Techniques We Offer

Thompson Technique

These are table-assisted adjustments that rely on gravity to assist in each adjustment and promote a lower-force method. This technique also allows Dr. Burgess and Dr. Davis to maintain the alignment of the spine while returning the vertebrae to their proper motion. It was devel oped by Dr. J. Clay Thompson, a 1947 graduate of Palmer, and has been proven to be an effective and safe method of adjusting patients of all ages. The table is set to each person’s body, so it is a very personalized, specific, and gentle technique. Relief is also usually immediate.

Activator Technique

This is a tool-assisted adjustment. Developed by Dr. Warren C. Lee, DC, and Dr. Arlan W. Fuhr, DC, in the 1960s, the activator technique is a very low-force technique that utilizes a whole body protocol for determining what vertebra is misaligned and the direction needed for correc tion. Activator is a very light force technique.

Diversified Technique

This is the traditional twist-them-like-a-pretzel technique. Taught in almost every chiropractic college, this is one of the original techniques used to remove the subluxation (vertebra in misalignment). Dr. Burgess was lucky enough to be trained by Dr. Alfred States, who wanted us to know three ways to move every bone in the body using Diversified. This technique is for those who like to “hear” the release of nitrogen from the joint space–that trademark popping sound that comes with more forceful adjustments.

Extremity Adjusting

Yes, sometimes your feet, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands need to be adjusted. We use the appropriate technique (Herron method, Charette protocol, activator, or drop table) that works best for your body's needs. This is a precise technique for correcting misalignment within the small bones of the body.

Cupping Technique

This method uses small plastic cups that create a vacuum-like suction to treat acupuncture points and draw blood to the surface of the skin. This allows a healing process to take place in the area where the cups are applied. The suction from the cops pulls up the deep tissue that re leases adhesion, allowing your muscles to move without restrictions. In turn, the lymphatic system is activated to clear the blood vessels.

Graston Technique

This technique is a way of using tools to perform myofascial release. This is a powerful tool for the treatment of old injuries, tendonitis, plantar fascitis, carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, etc. It is also extremely useful for sprained ankles/wrists – returning the athlete to performance quickly (usually within days).

Acupuncture

This science has been used for thousands of years in Asia and is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine used to prevent and treat diseases. Restoring your neuro-musculoskeletal system is our focus at Burgess Chiropractic, since the body is an integrated whole made up of parts—thus the yin/yang. When the flow of energy–qi–is blocked, the body cannot communicate with the brain. Acupuncture is per formed to remove the blockages, allowing the free flow of qi through the body to enable the body to heal itself. Dr. Burgess is the only chiropractor in our office who is licensed in acupuncture.
